In Your Corner with CORA: Common Shoulder Injuries for Football Players

Aug 28 2020 | CORA Development Team

Your Health, Objectively. Treating Everyone Right.

Part 1 of our expert panel series on football begins with common shoulder injuries! As teams across the country gear up for Fall play to get underway our panel guests will spend the next five weeks focusing on topics all-things football from youth to collegiate to the professional ranks.

And even if your season has fallen victim due to historic COVID-19, that’s OK. The information presented and knowledge you will gain from these world-class experts can benefit you for many seasons to come. We hope you join us for some deep-dive discussions that address common football injuries to include both upper and lower extremities (i.e. shoulders, hips,  knees, ankles, and concussions). Special guests include:

  • Dr. Rick Lehman, Director of U.S. Center for Sports Medicine + CEO LehmanHealth
  • Dr. Tim McGarry, MD, McGarry Orthopedic Clinic (Virginia)
  • Charles Peters, DPT, CSCS, Level 2 USAW, Senior Clinic Manager, CORA North Bristol (Virginia)
  • Brett Kolnick, MSPT, CSCS, Regional Manager at CORA (Kentucky & Tennessee)

Come listen and learn as Dr. McGarry explains the biomechanics and the mechanisms of interior and posterior shoulder instability as it pertains to football; he also talks about how physical therapy post-op is mission critical immediately following a procedure so the patient can begin increasing range of motion.

Plus, Brett Kolnick reflects on his journey as a four year starter, team captain and former standout at Eastern Kentucky University where he himself, or teammates he witnessed, experienced similar injuries on the gridiron. Today, as Regional Manager at CORA Physical Therapy, he has been able to gain from those experiences as a player to positively impact patients on their road to recovery. What does that mean? Keeping athletes in the game is the name of the game and nobody knows that better than Brett.

A 3-sport athlete himself in high school and star linebacker turned Physical Therapist, Charles Peters DPT adds his unique insights on how he’s able to help football players return-to-play quicker and faster due to the strong relationship (and close proximity) he’s developed with Dr. Tim McGarry.

What are some of the differences in approaches to anterior shoulder and posterior shoulder instability? Specifically, what is more common when playing football and what is the best treatment for first dislocators? The panel reveals certain indications in a shoulder dislocation that usually require surgery. Pre-hab and rehab for a first time dislocator, parameters of immobilization, length of time for return-to-play post-injury and so much more.

On the next episode (Part 2 of Common Shoulder Injuries for Football Players), the panel addresses on-track and off-track lesions, explains the treatment for recurrent instability in addition to the rehab process and maintenance following shoulder reconstruction. Other topics will include items such as:

  1. When do you recommend a soft tissue procedure vs. a Latarjet?
  2. What are the complications of reconstructive shoulder surgery? Are they different in open vs. arthroscopic cases?
  3. How long does it take to return-to-play?

BONUS: Tune in to hear Brett Kolnick share his own personal story from his time playing football! It’s something he’s rarely -if ever!- shared publicly before. You won’t want to miss it!
