Unpacking Pain Neuroscience Education with Jessie Podolak, DPT

Jun 12 2020 | CORA Development Team

Jessie Podolak, PT, DPT, Fellow of Pain Science at Evidence In Motion, sits down with CORA to talk about the science behind pain and solutions for managing pain. Listen and learn more about Jessie’s unique insights on the Biopsychosocial model of pain including how a single experience with Dr. Timothy W. Flynn helped shaped her perspective on pain management.

And how a course on Explained Pain taught by Dr. Adriaan Louw, Vice President of Faculty at Evidence In Motion, many years ago continues to greatly influence her career. To this day, she credits the course for challenging her to think more critically about the sensitivities of our nervous system and the role it plays in patients experiencing pain in their recovery programs.

Pain is bigger than our mechanics. It’s bigger than our movement. Those things influence it and they are very important, but pain is not just a joint somewhere that’s not moving right, that all you need to do is the right mobilization and that will fix it. Pain is a complex construct. It’s very human. It’s not a sensation, it’s an experience. – Jessie Podolak, PT, DPT, Fellow of Pain Sciences (Evidence in Motion)

Evidence in Motion’s hybrid learning environment continues to fuel her passionate pursuit to develop a deeper connection with patients. Doing so, she explains, helps unpack the direct correlation between our nervous system and perceptions of pain so that therapists can better understand the potential implications it can have on the road to recovery.

Pain neuroscience education is guided by a few fundamental principles that help develop a deeper understanding of what we are learning is a vigilant nervous system. The goal: decrease fear, increase knowledge. Help get patients back in the game!

This EXCLUSIVE never-before-seen interview with Jessie Podolak, PT, DPT seeks to sharpen clinical decision-making skills and presents patients with a unique perspective on the power of pain.
